West Stow Park and Anglo-Saxon Village
What was it like to be an Anglo-Saxon? At West Stow you can find out. In the middle of a country park there is a very important archaeological site where there is an authentic reconstruction of an Anglo-Saxon Village on the site where it was excavated. You can go inside the remarkable wooden homes where the sights and the smells of a past world make the centuries fall away. Outstanding archaeological finds from the first humans to the Romans, Vikings and more – from digs across West Suffolk – are shown along with insights into cutting edge ‘experimental archaeology’.
There is a lot to see and do as you can also watch a film, dress up as an Anglo-Saxon or say hello to the rare breed pigs and chickens, visit the café, the heritage shop and look at the two museum galleries.
Guided tours of the site are daily, 11.30am and 2.30pm. There’s even more to see and do on living history and event days which regularly take place at weekends and holidays. Ask about the new Mini Dig on the site. In the Park there is a large play area, den building area and lots of walks near woods, river and a lake.
The combinations of indoor and outdoor, original and reconstruction, Anglo-Saxon and multi period make West Stow an enjoyable and educational day out for all the family.
