Cannock Chase Country Park
This is one of the largest country parks in England. Although the Country Park is largely ‘motorless’, its many car parks are easily accessible and pleasant picnic facilities abound.
The Cannock Chase Visitor Centre is located at Marquis Drive, and includes a café and small gift shop.
Also located on the Chase near Sherbrook Valley are a Commonwealth War Cemetery and the German Military Cemetery containing the graves of 5,000 German Servicemen from two World Wars.
There is a reconstructed Great War Hut at the Visitor Centre, which was originally part of one of the two army training camps constructed on Cannock Chase, at Brocton and Rugeley. Half of the hut is kitted out as it would have been in 1915, the other half as an interpretation centre. Education visits are available by arrangement.
The hut is open to the public fortnightly on a Sunday. Please telephone: 01543 871773 to check opening hours and for more information.
There is a small car parking charge at the Visitor Centre.
Facilities: There are designated car park spaces for people with disabilities and a RADAR keyed toilet. There are three electric ‘Booster Scooters’ available for free loan from the Visitor Centre, with traffic free waymarked routes across the park. A flat, well surfaced trail around the old RAF camp is suitable for wheelchair users. This is a free service, and full instruction is provided. Advance telephone booking is advised.
