No one knows exactly when the steps were created, but it is believed they date back to pre 1696 when the local newspaper, the Macclesfield Express, gave the cobbled 108 steps the simple nickname ‘The Steps’.

The steps are located behind Saint Michael’s Church and lead down to Macclesfield train station. People have been known to come remarkable distances to walk up these steps where you can also see some old brick houses full of character.

It is a scenic walk up the steps if you have the stamina!
